Wieslaw and Jim Rivers of Memory

Rivers of Memory represents a compilation of over five years of music and sound composition by Wieslaw Pogorzelski and Jim McKee working in collaboration with musicians, filmmakers and writers.

Their first work was an experiment of sound design and classical music with the chamber group Stratos on a Warner Brothers release in 1996. Many of these pieces were then realized in surround sound and performed live.

Blind and Our Perversions, two works by writer Debra De Blasi, were commissioned by Finnish Broadcastings’ Radio Atelier in 1997. (Later published in her short story collection "Prayers of an Accidental Nature") These pieces where improvised into two separate digital muti-track sessions and then deconstructed to orchestrate an hour-long production of spoken word and sound effects.

WieslawIn 1998 the two began scoring an original piece for the short film Asphalto- an Aria for 13 Gas Stations and Demolition Cars by Finnish filmmaker/director Ilppo Pohjola. Routemaster-Theatre of the Motors soon followed in 1999. This work conceived entirely on electronic violin, articulates speed through a scored quartet ostinati and feedback techniques performed through a large Marshall amplifier. Both scores combine original music composition by the artist Merzbow.

Jim and Wieslaw had the unique opportunity to work with Erik Bauersfeld of Bay Area Drama and Lawrence Ferlighetti on an original radio play in early 2000. This improvised composition creates an evocative mood and uses the electronic violin and bass help to illustrate with music effects specific characters described in text. The entire piece was originally performed as a trio with Lawrence reading the text, Wieslaw on violin and bass and sampled effects on keyboard.

Over the past two years, the two have continued to collaborate on many film scores and sound designsand these pieces are a compilation of many of the works described above, along with some new ideas still searching for a home.
